Blog: Winter 2024 Furniture & Decor Trends: Viva Habitat's Takeaways from Europe’s Top Design Fairs

At Viva Habitat, we're always eager to discover the latest trends in home furnishings, attending the Intergift Fair in Madrid and MOM Fair in Paris this year was an exhilarating experience. Walking through these exhibitions, I could really sense the direction the industry is heading and sharing the key takeaways with you.

  1. Nature-Inspired Comfort with a Twist

At both fairs, one thing was clear: the natural world is continuing to influence furniture design, but it’s now combined with a luxurious touch. I was struck by how often earthy tones—deep greens, rich terracotta, and soft browns—were used to create serene, grounded spaces. Everywhere I turned, I saw furniture made from recycled wood and teak. What really stood out, though, was how beautifully these natural materials were crafted. We’re no longer just talking about rustic designs; these pieces have a refined elegance to them.

Teak wood was a star of the show—especially in outdoor furniture collections. It’s no longer just about being eco-friendly but about bringing craftsmanship and natural beauty together in a way that feels modern yet timeless.

  1. Sustainable Design: More Than Just a Trend

Sustainability wasn’t just a buzzword at these fairs—it was a core philosophy. As I wandered through the halls, I noticed that sustainable practices were at the forefront of nearly every brand’s story. What really caught my attention was how effortlessly brands were combining luxury and sustainability. Pieces made from recycled materials—whether reclaimed wood or eco-friendly fabrics—didn’t feel like compromises. Instead, they were statement pieces in their own right.

I think what made this especially compelling was how brands were moving beyond just furniture. From decorative objects to textiles, sustainability has permeated every aspect of home decor, giving consumers more ways to make responsible choices without sacrificing aesthetics.

  1. Minimalism with Warmth

I’ve always appreciated minimalist design, but at these fairs, I saw it take on a new warmth. Rather than the stark, cold minimalism we’ve seen in previous years, Winter 2024 minimalism is about coziness. Picture clean lines and functional designs but softened with plush upholstery and inviting curves. The modular furniture on display was a game-changer—perfect for small spaces but with a focus on comfort. I remember sitting on a curved modular sofa that felt like the perfect blend of sleek and inviting. These pieces, many of them upholstered in rich textures like velvet or boucle, are designed to adapt to modern lifestyles while still maintaining that sense of ease.

  1. Industrial Edge Meets Organic Softness

This was a fascinating trend for me: the mix of industrial materials like metal and stone, paired with organic textures. As I walked through the booths at MOM, I saw this contrast play out in everything from lighting fixtures to accent furniture. Rough, industrial elements were being softened with warm, natural materials like wood and wool. One setup really stuck with me: a dining table with a sleek metal base, topped with a natural wooden slab. Around it, were industrial-style chairs softened with cushioned seats in wool and leather. This blend of raw and refined materials felt modern and edgy but still inviting enough for everyday living.

  1. Multi-Functional Furniture for Flexible Living

One thing I realized at both fairs was the continued rise of multi-functional furniture. More than ever, people are looking for pieces that can do it all—whether it’s a sofa that doubles as storage or a dining table that can expand for guests. These designs were especially prominent in small-space solutions, which really stood out to me. The clever use of hidden storage and modular designs makes it easy to maximize space without sacrificing style. In fact, I was most impressed by how seamless these innovations were—form and function were beautifully integrated, offering flexibility while maintaining a sleek, polished look.

  1. Rich Textures and Layered Comfort

Lastly, texture was everything this season. As I made my way through the halls of Intergift, the importance of luxurious, tactile fabrics was unmistakable. I saw velvet upholsterychunky knit blankets, and wool rugs everywhere, layered together to create an atmosphere that felt incredibly inviting. It was clear to me that Winter 2024 decor is all about creating warmth, not just visually but through touch. It’s this combination of rich textures and layered textiles that will turn homes into cozy, stylish sanctuaries this season and are there to stay.

  1. Color Trends for Winter 2024,

The color trends that stood out at the Intergift Fair in Madrid and MOM Fair in Paris revolve around creating a sense of warmth, serenity, and a connection to nature. Here are the key color trends:

Earthy Tones: Rich, natural colors are dominating the season. Warm browns, deep terracotta, and muted greens are everywhere. These colors help bring a calming, grounded energy to interior spaces, offering a cozy and welcoming vibe perfect for winter.

Soft Neutrals: Beige, ivory, and soft taupe remain popular, especially when layered with textures. These subtle, neutral shades work well with the more saturated earth tones, balancing minimalism with warmth.

Deep Greens: Green continues to trend, but for winter, it's leaning towards deep forest greens and olive tones. These darker shades pair beautifully with natural wood and metallic accents, creating an elegant and nature-inspired atmosphere.

Warm Greys and Charcoal: Greys are getting warmer this season, with soft grey tones that add sophistication without feeling too stark. Charcoal, too, is making an impact, especially when paired with lighter neutrals or metallics for a modern edge.

Jewel Tones: Pops of luxurious jewel tones like burgundyemerald, and navy blue add drama and elegance to winter interiors. These are often used in accent furniture or decor to create bold, stylish focal points.

Dusty Pinks and Soft Blush: Softer, muted versions of pink are still trending, adding a delicate, romantic feel. These colors work well when paired with greys, taupe, or natural woods to soften the space.

These color palettes reflect a desire for warmth, comfort, and a natural connection in interior design, which resonates perfectly with the winter season.

  1. Lighting Trends

Bold, sculptural lighting continues to gain popularity. Whether it's oversized pendant lights or artistic floor lamps, these pieces are becoming focal points in rooms. At both fairs, I noticed lighting fixtures doubling as functional art, with unique shapes and materials that add personality to any space. Think large, organic forms, geometric designs, or even pieces inspired by nature, like leaf or flower motifs.

Soft, Ambient Lighting to counterbalance the minimalist aesthetic, soft, diffused lighting is making a strong appearance. Fixtures with frosted glass or textured shades help to create a warm, cozy glow. I saw many setups that used layers of lighting—combining table lamps, floor lamps, and overhead fixtures to create a soothing ambiance, perfect for winter's shorter, darker days.

Natural Materials in Lighting much like the furniture trends, lighting is embracing natural materials. Lamps and fixtures made with wood, rattan, and natural fibers were prominent. These materials add a tactile, organic touch that complements the earthy tones trending this season. Many of the designs have a handcrafted, artisanal feel, bringing warmth and nature into living spaces.

Industrial Lighting with a Soft Edge While industrial design isn’t new, it’s being softened this season. Raw materials like metal and concrete are still popular, but they’re often paired with softer textures or warm finishes like brass and bronze. For example, I saw metal-framed chandeliers with fabric shades, and pendant lights made from industrial materials but featuring warmer, toned-down hues.

Smart, Adjustable Lighting With the rise of multi-functional spaces, smart lighting solutions are becoming a must-have. I noticed more adjustable lighting fixtures designed to fit a variety of moods and activities. From dimmable LED lights to fixtures that can be repositioned for different tasks (like reading, working, or relaxing), lighting is becoming an adaptable, functional part of home decor.

Minimalist and Linear Designs In keeping with the minimalist furniture trends, sleek, linear lighting designs are a big hit. Thin, linear pendants or LED strips are being used to highlight specific areas, like dining tables or kitchen islands, without overwhelming the space. These designs offer clean lines and modern elegance, while still providing ample lighting.

This winter’s lighting trends are all about striking a balance between form and function. Whether it’s sculptural statement pieces or ambient lighting using natural materials, the goal is to create cozy, inviting spaces while maintaining a modern aesthetic. As lighting becomes more versatile and artful, it offers an opportunity to enhance your home’s atmosphere while staying on trend.
